HLTPAT005 – Collect specimens for drug abuse testing
The course applies to individuals who are involved in collecting specimens for drugs of abuse testing. It will provide individuals with the skills and knowledge required to confirm collection requirements, prepare client and equipment and collect specimens via urine and/or oral and breath testing following the special procedures that apply for drugs of abuse testing in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice. The skills and knowledge gained by completing this course would be beneficial for individuals working in collection centres, in hospitals, in other health care environments and workplaces where drugs of abuse testing take place.
Students may be required to complete additional supervision of work activities by a person currently working in a collection role for at least 18 hours in a fortnight time period.
Mode of Delivery: Face to face training in a classroom environment with a pre-course assessment to be completed before attending the on course.
Location: Pilbara First Aid’s premises
All courses are delivered face to face, with some online learning, they can be delivered on site at your work place or at Pilbara First Aid’s premises.
All courses are delivered in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines.

Entry Requirements:
- Participants must have the physical capacity to use appropriate equipment and complete assessment tasks
- Participants must be able to complete activities in a workplace under the supervision of a person currently in a collection role for at least 18 hours in a two (2) week time period
Course Duration:
- Blended delivery – 8 hours (minimum) – full face to face course.
Assessment Requirements:
Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks. These are detailed in the sections following.
Students will also be required to complete additional supervision of work activities and submit a third-party observation report.
Renewal Requirements: No industry recommended renewal is identified on the certificate, employers are recommended to consult with stakeholders to identify appropriate training periods.

Certificate valid: No expiry, unless qualification requirements change.
Assessment Activities:
Assessments conducted during face-to-face training session(s) include:
- Performance tasks:
- Collect a urine sample for drugs of abuse testing (non-compliant client)
- Collect an oral fluid sample for drugs of abuse testing (tampered sample – problem solving)
- Collect a breath sample for drugs of abuse testing
- Documentation:
- Chain of custody forms for a urine sample, oral fluid sample and a breath analysis sample
- Theory assessment – A written assessment consisting of short answer and multiple-choice questions
- Post-course assessment – Complete supervised work activities by completing a third-party observation report by a person currently working in a collection role for at least 18 hours in a fortnight time perio
Course Refund and Transfer Policy

A full refund will be provided if:
- Pilbara First Aid cancels a class and cannot nominate a suitable attendance date; or
- A notice is given by the participant at least five (5) working days prior to the commencement of the course
Note: Refunds may require a written request
A transfer may be permitted if:
- The first aid course is completed within three (3) months of original course date (the course transfer will incur a $20.00 administration fee)
No refund or transfer will be given:
- If the class has already commenced
- If no notice is provided
- If pre course online work is not completed with 60 days of completions of course – the student competency status will be updated to ‘abandoned’. and they will need to rebook, repay and attend the course again.
Note: A cancellation fee will apply if: A cancellation, or request to transfer the training to another date, is received less than 5 business days before the course commencement, after a course has commenced or no participants attend the course as scheduled. The cancellation fee is the cost of the course.
